About us
Though many connections have been made using the traditional methods of genealogy, the Y-DNA study offers us a whole new opportunity to find others who may be releated to our lines.
The testing is simple and painless. Only a male in the direct line will have inherited the Y-DNA, so the females will need to ask a male DEWHURST relative to participate.
Through this group surname project, FamilyHistoryDNA.com will give a discount on the test fees. They suggest that we start with the basic 12 marker Y-DNA test, since if there are major differences at 12 markers, there's not much sense in going further.
However, if the first 12 markers result in a close match, it becomes very desirable to increase the tests to 25 and 37 markers.
The upgrade can be done with the sample that has already been submitted. There is no need to submit a new sample.
So far, our experience has been that all but one of the DEWHURST/ DEWHIRST members tested have matched exactly on the first 12 markers.
For our project, it seems that the 25 and 37 marker tests are needed to make our discoveries. The one who was different within the first 12 markers, matched exactly on all the rest up through 37.
We welcome any and all variations of the surname. Please join us.
One word of caution though - there have been surprising results in some other families (not ours, of course!) either because of untold adoptions or other "non paternity events", some people did not match those they expected to. Be aware that this is something that could happen.
