About us

As expected we have a number of distinct genetic families which have been arranged into groups according to their matching DNA results. Outlines of the direct paternal line of each project participant, where available, have been provided below. Further information and contact details can be provided by the group administrator.

Cruwys group 1
This group consists of four men with the surname Cruwys, one man with the surname Crewes, one man with the surname Cruise, one man with the surname Cruse, one man with the surname Cruice, one man with the surname Raney and one man with the surname Weakland. The Cruwys/Crewes DNA results have verified the existing paper research into the Cruwys Morchard line from Devon, England.  Four of the men are documented descendants of John Cruwys of Cruwys Morchard who was born in 1449, the son of Sir Thomas Cruwys. Three men are descended from John's first marriage to Elizabeth Whitley via his great-grandson Thomas Cruwys, who was buried in 1596 in Winkleigh, Devon. Two men are descended from John's second marriage to Mary Fraunceys. John and Mary's son, Anthony Cruwys or Crewes, moved to Liskeard in Cornwall. The Cornish family have their own coat of arms and have always used the distinctive Crewes spelling. In the Devon line the Cruwys spelling only became standardised from the late 1700s onwards and a variety of alternative spellings is found in the parish registers. The remaining Cruwys in this group can trace his line back to Mariansleigh, Devon, in the late 1700s but no documented link with the Cruwys Morchard line has yet been found. Kit no. 198886 (a Cruse from Mississippi) has been placed in this group because he is a 60/67 marker match with the Crewes from Cornwall, his closest match within this group. The FTDNA TiP tool indicates that they have a 90.83% chance of sharing a common ancestor within the last 24 generations. The Irish Cruise result has been tentatively placed in this group because the DNA results are consistent with a common shared ancestor between the Irish Cruises and the Devon/Cornwall Cruwyses/Creweses dating back to the 1100s. It is believed that the Norman surname Cruise was introduced to Ireland shortly after the Anglo-Norman invasion of Ireland in 1169. At 67 markers the FTDNA TiP tool indicates that kit no. 130860 (Cruise of Ireland) and his closest match in this group kit no. 107091 (Crewes of Cornwall) have an 84.06% chance of sharing a common ancestor within the last 24 generations. These results are therefore consistent with the hypothesis that the two lines are related. BigY results are also consistent with this hypothesis.

Cruwys group 2
This second Cruwys group originates in Devon and Cornwall in England. Six of the men in this genetic family have the surname Cruwys, and one man has the surname Cruse. Kit no. 107548 and Kit no. 134695 are documented sixth cousins and their shared common ancestors are Richard Cruse and Betty Moor who married in 1753 in Fitzhead, Somerset. DNA testing has effectively verified the documented pedigree back to this point. Kit no. 157762 has a line which traces back to Dulverton in Somerset.
The line of kit no. 127489 can be traced back to Kilkhampton in Cornwall which is very close to the border with Devon. The other three men are from a London Cruwys line which emigrated to Australia. We have not yet found the link in the paper trail between the Devon, Somerset, Cornish and Australian trees. Interestingly, in 1794 John Cruwys (1754-1842) of Wiveliscombe, the son of Richard Cruse and Betty Moor, and the brother of Richard Cruze/Crayes below, brought an unsuccessful claim in Chancery against the Cruwys Morchard estate. He claimed to be descended from the Cruwys the shoemaker of Cheriton Fitzpaine mentioned in the 1791 will of John Cruwys clerk. Unfortunately there do not appear to be any living male descendants from the Cheriton Fitzpaine line to see if the claim can be verified by modern DNA techniques. These seven participants belong to haplogroup G-L497, one of the rarer haplogroups which is only found at very low frequency in the British Isles.

Cruwys group 3
This is a singleton result, and it is suspected that this is an illegitimate Cruwys line. The only matching baptism which has been located so far for the William Cruwys at the head of the tree is that of William Purchase Cruys [sic], baptised on 2nd November 1794 in Cheriton Fitzpaine, the illegitimate son of Sarah Cruwys. If so, we might eventually expect to see matches with the surname Purchase.

Crews/Cruse group 1
This is currently an all-American group consisting mostly of men with the surname Crews and some men with the surname Cruse. All the men in this group have very close DNA matches, indicating a shared common ancestry. This line can be traced back to Virginia in the late 1600s. An account of the early part of the tree can be found here. However, most of the trees in this group cannot be reliably traced back beyond the late 1700s, though mutation patterns are helping to establish family sub-groupings. All the participants in this group belong to haplogroup I1. The pedigrees are arranged in the order in which they appear on the Y-DNA results page.

1. Rebecca Elizabeth Crews (b. 1822 Camden County, Georgia – died 1885 Charlton County, Georgia), daughter of  Samuel Crews and Elizabeth Griffis
Rebecca never married so her children were named Crews. It was thought that Captain John J. North of Clinch County, Georgia, was the father of several of her children. However, Y-DNA testing has now shown that her son John Cone Crews matches the Crews DNA signature. A living descendant of Captain John J North was tested but his results do not match those of the descendant of John Cone Crews. The working hypothesis is that John Cone Crews was the son of William Cone Crews (1820-1906). William Cone Crews was the son of Roger Crews (1789-1837) and Elizabeth Mitchell (1791-1850). He was Rebecca’s first cousin. The middle name Cone is thought to derive from Captain Daniel N Cone. Alexander Crews, the uncle of Rebecca Crews and William Cone Crews, served in the Indian War of 1838 under Captain Daniel N. Cone.

Kit no. 27957 and 34326, a Crews and a Screws, are third cousins twice removed. They match on 66/67 markers. The FTDNA TiP calculator shows that they have a 95.18% chance of sharing a common ancestor within the last eight generations. This result has effectively verified the existing documentary research. Kit no. 64878 shares a common ancestor with the other two men in John Screws (d. 1727 or 1729 Isle of Wight, Virginia). He matches kit no. 34326 on all 67 markers and kit no. 27957 on 66/67 markers, again confirming the paper trail. Kit no. 209860 also belongs to this group but the link in the paper trail with the Isle of Wight, Virginia, line has not yet been found.

1. Stephen Screws (b. c. 1810 either South Carolina or North Carolina) m. Mary "Polly" Hand in Jasper County, Georgia. (Documentation to be established.)
2. William Riley Screws (b. 1842 Georgia - d. 1911 Alabama) m. Martha Ganes Bradley Messer on Valentine’s Day of 1863 on leave from the Confederate Army during the Civil War. The first known documentation of Wm Riley is found in the US Census of 1860 in which we find a young Wm Riley Screws in the home of Miles Parker Messer in Alabama. Also listed in this home are a young Martha Bradley Ganes Messer, the baby sister of the head of household, as well as their aging father, James F. Messer b. 1788.  Wm Riley was raised as an orphan by the Messer family. Family lore stated for many years that Stephen Screws abandoned his wife and young William and shortly thereafter, William’s mother, Mary "Polly" Hand, it is said, passed away leaving William Riley alone with no parents. He was brought to the Messer’s because they were related to him through his mother’s side of the family. This suggestion bears fruit via the intermarriage between this Hand Family and the siblings of James Franklin Messer and  is thoroughly documented and absolutely proven. Further proof that William RILEY Screws is the husband of Martha Messer and the father of James Marion Screws, Miles Parker Screws and others can simply be found at their gravesites where William RILEY and Martha are buried next to each other and states on the tombstones their spouses names.
