I thought I would begin by sharing a photo taken by my cousin in Cornwall, Mary Chown, with whom I share a maternal ancestor, Rebecca Ford of St. Hilary. Rebecca's granddaughter and my 3rd great-grandmother, Amelia Williams, was born on St Michael's Mount in 1826 and immigrated to Upper Michigan in the USA with her husband, Josiah Sampson and most of their 16 children. I am looking forward to working on this project and seeing where it take us!

Welcome, Lynne. One of my three Cornish lines left nearby Goldsithney - in 1847. They were SAMPSONs too, but maybe from a different origin. But my mtDNA line goes via Ann MICHELL who married George HICKS at Redruth in 1808. The MICHELL possibilities before that are too many.

Thanks, Christopher. I know what you mean about Michells! Amelia and Josiah's daughter, Bessie, married John Michell (born 1853 in Redruth) in Houghton, Michigan. I tried to identify him for about 20 years and did not think it was going to be possible. Then a number of 3rd-4th cousins descending from his siblings took autosomal DNA tests during the past year, and I had my answer loud and clear. John's parents were John Michell and Mary Stevens. My Sampson line lived mostly in Lelant and Phillack
