About us

This private Combs surname project is for those direct descendant male Combs who have Y-DNA tested positive to the Combs line of I2a1b1 (formerly I1b and I2a2a). Most of us in this line can trace our lineage back to 1 of the 8 sons (Mason, Nicholas "Danger Nick", William "Old Buckery", John "Soldier", Henry Harrison, Biram, George and Elijah) of John Combs & Nancy Harding or their two uncles William & Mason Combs Jr. After spending their youth and early adulthood bouncing around SW Virginia, some moved into the Yadkin River Valley of western North Carolina or into Hawkins & Sullivan Counties Tennessee and eventually settling into southeastern Kentucky through the Cumberland Gap sometime around the 1790's. Contrary to some of the old research which stated we descended from "Jamestown" John Combe who arrived on the ship Marigold back in 1619 to Jamestown, VA. The most recognized research now believes we descended from Archdale Combe(s) who arrived sometime around 1662 and is first found in records in Stafford County, VA then in Old Rappahannock County, VA which later split into Richmond & Essex Counties, VA. Archdale Combe(s) date of birth has been debated but he was baptised 16 Nov 1641 in Soulbury, Buckinghamshire, England the son of John Combe b.1602 London to d.1652 Sparsholt) & Elizabeth Lovett b.1615 Wotton Underwood d.1656 Oxford. As a note children were usually baptised within the first week of birth due to the high infant mortality rate. Archdale entered into an apprenticeship as a Draper in Dublin, Ireland in 1656 it is not known if he completed his apprenticeship since they usually last around 8 years. Archdale is likely named after an uncle, his father's late brother. His paternal grandparents were John Combe Esq.b~1560 Devon, d.1610 London and Margaret Archdale b.1569 London d.1616 London. His maternal grandparents were Robert Lovett b~1685 Buckinghamshire d.1643 Berkshire and Ann Saunders b~1585 Dinton, d.1646 Unknown. Contrary to popular believe his grandfather John was not the son of Lord Richard Combe but probably related. John Combe invested into the Virginia Company in 1608/9 shortly before his death in 1610, their purpose was to establish Colonial Settlements in North America. John nor his son John never ventured to these shores but it appears as John's grandson Archdale did. He married a widow Elizabeth Underwood and had a son John circa 1664 whom married an Ann Mason. There is another line of Combs that originated in and around the same area of Virginia and his name was Joseph Combs. His descendents have tested to the Haplogroup of R1b and are a separate unrelated line and due to this close proximity there have been a lot of confusion and errors in family trees mixing these two lines together. The purpose of this group is to get as many male descendants from all the different branches of this line to YDNA test and to figure out along which lines certain mutations in the YDNA markers occur. There are many of us who have a Non Paternal Event (NPE) in our ancestral past due to illegitimacy, adoption or taking of the mothers name that have prevented us for tying directly to a certain line, all that we know is that we are Combs. So this group welcomes all surnames besides Combs who have YDNA matched our Combs ancestors and we all want to know where and who are forefathers were.
