Archdale Combe the patriarch of this Combs haplogroup here in America immigrated here from England circa the early 1660's to the area around Fredericksburg, VA.

The first records of him are found in Stafford & Old Rappahannock Counties, VA. Archdale Combe was Christened 16 Nov 1641 was the son of John Combe & Elizabeth Lovett who were married 8 Jul 1630 in Soulbury, Buckinghamshire,England.

John Combe was named after his father and was the son of John Combe "Merchant of London" & Margaret Archdale. John Combe Sr was born circa 1560 likely in Devonshire, England.

He married Margaret Archdale 11Dec 1587 in London, England. John Sr. was a Merchant, Draper & London Common Councilman. He was a Gentleman and an Armiger. John Sr. purchased shares into the Virginia Company at some point before

his death on 7 Sep 1610 in London.

His wife Margaret, also from a family of wealth passed on 19 Sep 1616.More info on him http://www.combs-families.org/combs/families/c-j-arch.htm. Archdale married a widow by the name of Elizabeth Underwood (Her maiden is not for

certain known) shortly after his arrival and soon had a son with Elizabeth named John Combs born in the early 1660's was his only son that was known to have heirs.

Whether or not John married once or twice is a moot point and is not important, but his marriage to Ann Mason in the mid to late 1690's produced several offspring, 5 daughters and 2 sons.

His youngest son Mason Combs born 1713 in Richmond County, VA is the only son that is known to produce male heirs.  He married Sarah Ann Nelson circa 1734 in Caroline County, VA.

Mason had 7 documented children; 4 girls and 3 boys beginning in 1736 all believed to have been born in Stafford County, VA.

On the tax lists between 1736 & 1760 he was also known to be in or hold property in Frederick County, VA and Augusta County,VA.

Obviously, these county boundaries have changed and been renamed to other Counties since then. Mason was in Rowan County, NC by 1768 and passed away in Dobson, Surry County, NC 16 Nov 1785.

His son's John (1736), William (1740) and Mason Jr (1747) have been found on tax list in numerous counties of the western part of Virginia, in Surry & Wilkes County, NC and in Sullivan County, TN in the Long Island of the Holston River

by the early to late 1790's John and William were up into Kentucky by 1800 and Mason Jr and his family remained in Tennessee in the Hawkins County area. John married Nancy Harding around 1755 in Frederick County, VA

and had 8 documented sons, in order (Mason,William, John, Nicholas, Henry Harrison, Biram, George and Elijah) he may also of had two daughters (Wilmouth & Barbara).

It is believed that all the children, but Barbara were born in Frederick County, VA and Barbara in Surry County, NC. Wilmouth it is conjectured died young and spawned his relocation out of North Carolina.

William married Sytha Stacy in about 1762. Only two children have been documented, a son John (married Sarah MNU and a daughter Winifred married Samuel Sumner & Robert Hicks).

However, it is believed he had more and possibly a William Jr married Mary "Polly" Skaggs abt 1786 in Frederick County, VA and a Jesse who married Polly Price in 1801 Wilkes County, NC. Mason Jr married a Dorothy "Dolly" MNU had 6 children: 4 girls and 2 boys.

His sons were Simeon (married Martha "Patty" Murrill) and Jeremiah (married Charity Rhodes). Simeon died in Warren County, TN and some of his children went to Missouri and Kansas.

Jeremiah and his family went to Madison County, Arkansas and some into the Barry County, MO area. John’s 8 sons were the primary proliferators of this line all over southeastern, KY and who most can tie their ancestral line to.

There have been many illegitimate lines that have come to light over the years that have through paternal male YDNA testing tied themselves to the Combs surname.
