About us

I'd like to invite Chavis males to join a newly formed Chavis DNA surname project. This project is for those who carry the surnames Chavis, Chaves, Chaveois, Chavus, Chavous, Chavas and Chavers. The goal of this project is to identify the various Chavis families and to see if they connect, and how. In NC, SC and Virginia, many of these families carry a history of Native American ancestry, but the Chavis surname is not limited to these areas. In the 1790 census, there were three Chavis families in NC, but by 1850, there were hundreds of families spread across many states, NC, SC, VA, AL, NM, TN, LA, GA, IN, MS, IL, OH, FL, MO, TX, CA and Maine. Join us in reconstructing these families. Please join the Chavis DNA project at Family Tree DNA, www.familytreedna.com/public/Chavis and click on "join request" at the top of the page.
