About us

DNA testing is an addition to the genealogist’s arsenal of tools in the search for ancestors. It is a supplement to the more traditional methods of contacting known relatives, perusing books and microfilm, and following the paper trail of original records. DNA testing can help bridge gaps in the traditional records and overcome “brick walls.” It can indicate the best direction for future research.

The Allgood Surname Project plans to use the male Y-chromosome to illuminate the path to direct male ancestors, since it also follows the surname path. Comparing the test results of two men with the same surname can indicate how closely they are related and how long ago their Most Recent Common Ancestor lived. It may also confirm surname variants and may show that men with different surnames actually have a common Allgood ancestor.

The Allgood haplogroup is R defined by the SNP M269. This haplogroup has its highest frequency in Western Europe. Its deep ancestors are thought to have taken refuge in southern France/northern Spain during the last ice age. As the ice retreated, they moved north through Europe, reaching the British Isles about 6,000 years ago.
