About us

The overarching goal is to connect us in the 21st century to the earliest settlers and migrants found in our lineages; to create a sense of connection with the past and local history. Subgoals may be created as certain families generate interest or as mysteries arise. Anything of the unknown is a possibility.

The majority of Y-DNA and mtDNA results will be sorted into subgroups, where possible and reasonable, by their closest circa 1606 haplogroup, as this is when Europeans first landed on Australian shores (even if they never exactly settled that early). When several members of a subgroup test with Big-Y700, this may help establish roughly when migrant ancestors could have arrived. Many kits in the project will provide a sort of 'beacon' or role model for other relatives who are researching a particular family.

Two or more kits with Aboriginal Australian lineages will be sorted into subgroupings on a case-by-case basis, as these lineages are older than those of more recent immigrants and so may prove generally more complicated to sort, at least at first. Male testers of C-PH41, K-M526, M*, O-F265, or S-B255 paternal descent may wish to investigate potential indigenous links, likewise for mtDNA testers of M*, N*, O*, P*, and S* maternal haplogroups. Note that research for Aboriginal Australian lineages is best undertaken by the devoted project, while Parramatta.SydneyAu is but a location-based project with – as far as indigenous lineages are concerned – a focus on Burramattagal and related eora who lived near the river.
