About us

This project intends to align descendants' DNA results and genealogies with historical individuals who lived in, moved through, or were very close to Parramatta—a 5.3 km (2.0 sq mi) area forming part of Greater Sydney, although this project unofficially covers the New South Wales area in general. The further back in time, the better. Testers whose ancestors did not live in Australia are not forbidden from joining. It is not required to purchase any particular DNA test to participate, but it is recommended to at least have "Family Finder" (or an autosomal transfer from another company; check our "Links" section to find out more), to compare against those who do have Y-chromosomal DNA (patrilineal) or mitochondrial DNA (matrilineal) results, and allow others to compare with your own results for such. As with all FamilyTreeDNA projects, no contact details or personal information will be publicised through the tools provided by FamilyTreeDNA. By joining, your basic Y-DNA STR marker+haplogroup results and/or mtDNA haplogroup results (if the appropriate tests were ordered) are automatically publicised in the DNA Results pages alongside your last name and earliest known matrilineal and/or patrilineal ancestors and their respective birth+death dates and places, unless you have specifically asked the website to not show this. Your earliest arrival to what is now the Commonwealth of Australia may also be noted on the 'Results' tab of the 'About' section, especially if their closest-aligning haplogroup is available. So that the administrator can effectively group your results, your project preferences for her will need to be set to at least Limited (not Minimal). Please ensure that you have a family tree with your kit. ** As of 16 March 2024, join requests have been turned on to ensure that would-be participants provide enough information for accurate subgrouping. This is not intended as a measure to exclude kits; if you just want to briefly join for DNA comparisons and then to leave right after, that is still acceptable. If you have never set foot in Australia, and neither has anyone in your direct paternal or maternal lines, you should say this first. OTHERWISE, where the default website message asks one to detail their EKAs on either line, please instead note your earliest arrival to Australia and where he/she arrived from, and then any other information you would consider important.
