About us

After finding documentary evidence from visits to the Norfolk Records Office and The National Archives at Kew (May 2010), I can now state with absolute certainty that Edward LAYTON (1770-1831) was indeed the son of William (1742-1834) and Elizabeth (née WATERS), baptized 24 January 1770 at Reedham under the given name of Thomas (a clerical mistake, or the parents changed their minds after the event). His Reedham brothers were William, Charles, John and Thomas, ancestors of several participants in this LAYTON project. Also, I can now confirm that William's father, another William (bapt 1707 Elsing - buried 1779 Loddon), was definitely the younger brother of the wealthy Thomas (bapt 1688 Elsing - bur 1757 Burlingham), both being sons of Thomas LAYTON (bapt 6 March 1663/64 Lyng - probably buried 1714 Elsing) & Elizabeth (née EASTHOW). This Thomas was the son of another Thomas (1633-1713 Lyng) & Martha (née HAIHOE), and his parents were ABRAHAM LAYTON (married 1627, buried 1675 in Lyng) & Bridgit (née LEMAN). Thus all the current LAYTON (& BROWN) participants with origins in and around the Reedham area of Norfolk (England) stem from this ABRAHAM, who is therefore our earliest known common ancestor. The Y-DNA testing has been a great help in confirming both assumed and 'unexpected' relationships and, in conjunction with the documentary evidence, we can now be 100% certain of our Norfolk origins. Not many genealogists can boast of tracing their pedigrees back to Abraham...
