Does your paper trail show you descend from Hugh Coffey b 1700 who lived in Augusta County Virginia? Do you have a Y or autosomal DNA match to any of his descendants? Then please join! "Hugh Coffee" is recorded in Augusta County, Virginia as early as 18 March 1746/7 when he was ordered to work on a road from the lower end of the Cowpasture River to Carter's Mill. He died about 1767 and many of his descendants were found in the Waxhaws area which includes Mecklenburg Co NC and Lancaster Co SC. He is known to have a son John Coffey b 1730 (his heir) and a daughter Rebecca, wife of William Gault, Revolutionary War Patriot. There may be others: a William Coffey, Benjamin Coffey, and Hugh Coffey who lived in South and North Carolina. The Project will build a complete tree of Hugh's descendants supported by both paper records and autosomal DNA evidence. The ultimate goal is to publish the results in scholarly format. Compiled genealogies written on this family have been consulted and are being confirmed and challenged by the DNA analysis. These include The Reed Family in America by Forrest F. Reed (1962), James Bluford Coffey-His Ancestors and Descendants in America by Marvin D. Coffey (1984), and Urquhart, Coffey, Boland, and Allied Families of The South by Annie Velma Urquhart Klayder (1991).
