This project is open to all descendants of Hugh Coffey (ca 1700- ca 1767). Hugh Coffey is recorded in Augusta County, Virginia as early as 18 March 1746/7 when he was ordered to work on a road from the lower end of the Cowpasture River to Carter's Mill. He died about 1767 and his descendants are known to have lived in the Waxhaw area in Mecklenburg Co NC and Lancaster Co SC. Some say he was married to Mary Ramsey, daughter of his neighbor John Ramsey, but the evidence is lacking, although many descendants have Ramseys among their DNA matches' surnames.

The Hugh Coffey Group of the Coffey Surname Project includes 5 men who descend from Hugh Coffey b 1700 of Augusta Co, VA have matching YDNA. Their Haplogroups are R-M269 seen in all 5 men who tested Y-37 or Y-111, and R-FTC70715 and R-FTB71880 in men who tested Y-700.The 4 who tested Y-700 have the common haplogroupR-FTBY71717 which they share with Brian Coffey of Portavogie, Down, Ireland. Here is the descent from Hugh for these 5 Y-tested descendants:
