Individual test participants are responsible for the purchase of a DNA test kit from FamilyTreeDNA.
FTDNA is offering at reduced prices DNA tests to registered family groups like our Gazaway/Gasaway group:

For the Y-DNA test we recommend choosing either the 37 or 67 marker Y-DNA tests because they are the most useful in narrowing down how recently two male Gazaway/Gasaway share a common ancestor. A 12 marker test is also available but does not test enough markers to tell reliably whether two men share a common ancestor within a genealogically meaningful time frame and the 25 marker test often needs to be upgraded to 37 markers before two men know for sure if they are closely related. However, we all need to live within our budgets, so starting with the 25 marker test can be a first step into the use of DNA test results to help find others who are related and enable them to share genealogical information.

Using the test kit, the participant scrapes the inside of their cheeks with two swab-like scrapers, and then inserts the scrapers into tubes filled with fluid designed to arrest bacteria growth. The swabs are then sent back to FamilyTreeDNA for analysis. In approximately 6 weeks, results will be mailed to the participant, and to the Group Administrator. There are options for having notices sent from FamilyTreeDNA to other individuals when the DNA results match.
After the results are received by the Group Administrator, they will be posted (WITH THE PARTICIPANTS PERMISSION) on this web site. For the project to be credible, several people within each line will need to be tested to validate the DNA markers for the line.
