According to Brian Sykes' classification, all individuals are Celtic in origin (R1b1b2). The two families from North Carolina, descended from David Coltrane and from James Coltrain have almost identical markers, thus suggesting a common ancestor. On the other hand, the markers of John Coltrin's family are significantly different. There does not seem to be a close relationship to the Coltrane/Coltrain families.
