DNA samples have tested for at least 12 markers for eleven individuals-three from descendants of David Coltrane, two from Major (given name) Coltrain and one from John Coltrain.  And five trace their ancestry from John Coltrin of Masssachusetts. (Preliminary paper research suggests that John Coltrain of Martin Co, NC was one of two sons of James Coltrain (c. 1745-1781). Major Coltrain (c. 1803-1870) was probably the grandson of James by his other son: James Coltrain of Martin Co, NC (c. 1775- 1814).)
