About us

FTDNA has no membership fee which you keep paying year after year as most other DNA sites do. Once you take a test, our research tools are there for you for free. At FamilySearch.org you can research and download records free of charge.

All Blizzard descendants are welcome to join our project: https://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=Blizzard

The Blizzard surname with R-yDNA probably originated with the name St. Blase aka St. Blaise in 4th century Armenia. The surname was Blaze in France and St. Blasey as well as Blesset in 13th century England, as well as G-yDNA of Blysard, and Blyssard. Many different Blizzard families were in America in the 1700's.

The goal of the Blizzard DNA Project is to discover family ties and origins. All variations of the Blizzard surname are welcome to join the Blizzard Project. We need at least two matches of each Blizzard family to prove that line's Haplogroup. We now have ten different y-DNA Haplogroups and we need a second man tested for most of them to prove the line. We are waiting for you!!

We really need you to test either your y-DNA, mt-DNA or Autosomal, Family Finder test, linking you with cousins with a Blizzard ancestor, as all major families in the USA have been tested, we need one more for each ancestor to prove their line.

The 12 marker y-DNA test is still available!! If you would like to order a 12 marker y-DNA test for yourself or someone else, please call them at 1-713-868-1438 to place the order.

We need you tested to learn more about your particular Blizzard line, as you carry their genes and you are important to us.

You may think you know which Blizzard line you belong to, or who your ancestors were, but until you are DNA tested it is only speculation. There are three different lines from both North Carolina and Virginia. Alabama and Tennessee Blizzards have been tested, however multi Blizzard lines live there as well, and not all are tested.

So far the project only has a few y-DNA Blizzard surname matches.

Two descendants of Richard Blizzard and Kezzekiah Carter of NC prove that y-DNA line is from Europe.

And two descendants of Thomas Blizzard of Darlington Dist, SC. A descendant of Voluntine Blizzard and Elizabeth Lovett of SC, and a descendant of his uncle Thomas F. Blizzard, Sr. and Martha Stafford who died in Alabama, prove this a G-y-DNA Romany line .

With mt-DNA we have a match of descendants of Stephen D. Blizzard and Nancy Glandon; And a descendant of Lorana Blizzard who married Lewis Shelhorn.

DNA testing can prove which of these lines you came from.

We need as many Blizzard members as possible to join our project and sort out families. Please click on the words Request to Join at the top of the page, or simply join through your FTDNA account. Several members have had Family Finder Tests completed, as well.

The Blizzard Families included in our project have descendants in Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia.

The Blizzard DNA Project needs a Co-Administrator. If you are interested, please contact me at the address below, or leave a note on the Activity page.
