Description
The Kirkman DNA Project welcomes all participants, both male & female. Please join today by completing the form at the bottom of this page.
Participating may help you to break down brick walls in your paper research. We will also discover which parts of the Worldwide Kirkman family are connected into matching family trees.
The surname variations in this DNA Project are also researched as part of the Kirkman one-name study.
The three primary tests for genealogy are Y-DNA for your direct paternal line, mtDNA for your direct maternal line, and Family Finder which can find cousins.
The Y-DNA test tells you about your direct male line - your Kirkman father, his father, and so on. Only males should take this test, and you need to have one of the surname variations shown. If you are female, you need to ask your father, brother or cousin with the Kirkman surname to take the Y-DNA test on your behalf.
We encourage males who want to take a Y-DNA test to order 37 markers (Y-DNA37). Prices are shown in the box at the bottom of this page next to Type of Test.
To learn more about your direct female line, which would be their mother, their mother's mother, and so on, from an mtDNA test. Both men and women inherit mtDNA, although only women pass it on. You should order an mtDNA test.
The Family Finder test is for both males & females, and can find your cousins of either gender. Also it can help adoptees find their roots.
Requirements
A Surname Project traces members of a family that share a common surname. They are of the most interest in cultures where surnames are passed on from father to son like the Y-Chromosome. This project is for males taking a Y-Chromosome DNA (Y-DNA) test. Thus, the individual who tests must be a male who wants to check his direct paternal line (father's father's father's...) with a Y-DNA12, Y-DNA37, Y-DNA67, or Y-DNA111 test and who has one of the surnames listed for the project. Females do not carry their father's Y-DNA. Females who would like to check their father's direct paternal line can have a male relative with his surname order a Y-DNA test. Females can also order an mtDNA test for themselves such as the mtDNAPlus test or the mtFullSequence test and participate in an mtDNA project. Both men and women may take our autosomal Family Finder test to discover recent relationships across all family lines.
