About us

Welcome to the Rule Surname Project:

This project is intended for males with completed Y-DNA testing with the Rule surname or other surnames with ancestral roots in Cornwall and other parts of the British Isles who are part of the E haplogroup.  However, we will also accept non-E males who link to the Rule surname via maternal DNA as well.  The Rule Family of Cornwall from which many Rule lines derive was centered in the hamlet of Camborne, Cornwall along with surrounding towns and countryside.  Many of the Rules left Cornwall in the 19th century to find opportunities elsewhere around the World.

So far, it has been learned through the Y-DNA testing of a limited number of individuals that Rule males pass on a very rare E-BY64057 haplogroup for the inhabitants of Cornwall and the entire British Isles.  We hope through the analysis of additional male members of the Rule lines that we might better understand how and when the original male Rule ancestor arrived in the British Isles.

It is likely that the Rule surname derived from some earlier yet unknown surname as few if any known Rules existed prior to 17th Century in Cornwall.  As a result, we welcome similar surnames to join, some of which are listed above.

At this time, we will also accept women with links to the Rule Surname for future development of the Rule Surname Project.   If accepted, you may not see your data on display until we come up with a system for comparison that furthers the goals of the project.
