The Y-DNA Haplogroup of the Schmidt paternal lineage has been identified as I1c.

Family Tree DNA describes Haplogroups I and I1c as follows:"I- Haplogroup I dates to 23,000 years ago or longer. Lineages not in branches I1a, I1b or I1c are found distributed at low frequency throughout Europe.

I1c- The I1c lineage likely has its roots in northern France. Today it is found most frequently within Viking / Scandinavian populations in Northwest Europe and extends at low frequencies into Central and Eastern Europe."

If you can trace your paternal lineage to anyone in our paternal Schmidt line or any of their male siblings, you are invited to join this project.

If you have Y-DNA Haplogroup, I1c, and think you might be a member of a paternal line originating from within someone in this project or your line goes back further than 1750, you are invited to join.

We recommend the Y-DNA37 test and the mtDNAPlus for this project.
