The first member of this project traces his Welty ancestry back to a John Welty who was born in York County, Pennsylvania, in 1827.  Although we have not been able to identify this John Welty's parents, he states in the 1900 Census (for St. Joseph County, Michigan) that his father was German.  It is thought that most Welty lines that came to the US before 1800, came from either south Germany or Switzerland.  We are interested in recruiting any males bearing the surname of Welty (or close spelling variants).    For more information on the patrilineages and DNA results of all our participants, please also see the following website:
