FAQ

Who can/should join this Project?
Anyone with an ancestral interest in the "Weldon" surname (or one of it's spelling varients) who has their DNA test results with FamilyTreeDNA.

Do I have to have been Y-DNA tested to join the project?
No.  You're welcome to join even if:
  • you haven't yet been Y-dna tested.
  • you have been Y-dna tested, but Weldon isn't your paternal line (so you don't carry "Weldon" Y-dna).
  • you can't Y-dna test (because you're female).
How can I tell if any other members of the project are relatives of mine?
The easiest way is to use the "Advanced Matching" tool on your FamilyTreeDNA "dashboard".  Check one of the test boxes (e.g. "Y-37" or "Familyfinder") then select "Weldon Project" in the drop-down selector. Any members of the project that match you on that selected test will be listed.

Should I encourage others to join the project?
If they have a direct family connection to the Weldon surname, then certainly!  It would be especially useful to encourage men carrying the "Weldon" Y-dna to join, even if they haven't yet been Y-dna tested.

I haven't yet been Y-DNA tested, so which test should I take?
The best advice is to take the biggest Y-DNA test that you can comfortably afford and - unless you're really impatient - wait for the next Sale.  Whilst the "Big-Y" test might be the ideal, it is relatively expensive,  so most people take a less expensive test and upgrade incrementally over a period of time. However, if the test is for yourself you should really aim to take at least the Y-67 or Y-111 test. If you are a woman, you don't carry Y-DNA of course, but you could get your brother, or your father, or your father's brother to Y-DNA test in your place.
