About us

yDNA is a tiny portion of the entire DNA molecule that is passed from FATHER TO SON for many generations with little or no change. Because of this unique quality, it can be used as a very powerful genealogical tool to trace surnames & their ancestral origins.

This project is for yDNA paternal analysis to assist with father to son genealogy for the descendants of Walter Phelps who immigrated to Anne Arundel Co, Md in 1680. Members must have submitted for or taken a yDNA test, a y111 or Big y700 test is suggested. So far, all tested members of the main Phelps surname project who believe they descend from Walter have a Presumed Positive haplogroup of M269 with one member, after conducting SNPs testing, has a confirmed haplogroup of Z255.

Z255 and its downstream subclades are SNPs within R1b-L21, and are associated with a DNA signature commonly known as the Irish Sea Haplotype. This unique haplotype is found in Northwestern Europe, mainly around the Irish Sea coasts of Great Britain and Ireland, but can also be found in France, the Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden.Furthermore, the following yDNA values are strongly associated with Z255: DYS389i and DYS389ii: 14 and 30, CDYa: 38 or higher value, CDYb: 39 or higher value, DYS437: 15, DYS449: 30, DYS442: 11 or 12, DYS446: 14.

If you are a male and are thinking of doing the yDNA test, then I urge you to also join the Phelps/Felps DNA project, which can be found at http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Phelps.
