About us
Vickery Surname Project has identified the following Vickery surname group as a Y-DNA-match group who share a common paternal ancestor:
Group 010 John Vickery, c1656-1698, Exeter, Devon, England, immigrant to Maryland. John Vickery obtained a land warrant for 400 acres in Penn's Proprietorship in a part of Pennsylvania that later became Delaware (this land is now in Kent Co. Delaware after boundary changes), surveyed 13 Feb. 1683/84 and recorded 10 July 1684. On 10 March 1695/1696, John Vickery entered a patent for "Bristol", containing 200 acres on Watts Creek and the south side of Choptank River, in Dorchester County, Maryland. ThE "Bristol" tract was assigned to him by John Taylor in a patent recorded 4 February 1695 (the same tract is now located in Caroline County after its formation from Dorchester County in 1773). John Vickery's first wife was Mary. He married second, Margaret. In 1698, there is record of John Vickery's estate settlement following his death in Dorchester County, Maryland [Maryland Archives: John Vicory, Dec'd., Inventory, Dorchester-Caroline County, Box 1, folder 8]. He was the father of two sons, John and Hezekiah. Elder son, John Vickery, inherited his father's land in Kent County and the 200 acres in Dorchester County called "Bristol". Younger son, Hezekiah Vickery, was a tenant of the 200 acres in Dorchester called "Bristol" and owned a smaller tract called "Pleasant" deeded to him by his father-in-law, James Holland. After many years, Hezekiah Vickery removed to Orange County, Virginia, with his wife Merci (Holland). Hekekiah Vickery and wife, Merci, were parents of six sons: Luke Holland Vickery, Marmaduke Vickery, Hezekiah Vickery, James Vickery, William Vickery, and Joseph Vickery. All members with Y-DNA results in the "010 John Vickery Group" are direct paternal-line descendants of John Vickery, 1656-1698, through his above-named grandsons. Current Y-DNA results for Group 010 represent lineages from three of the immigrant's grandsons: Hezekiah, Marmaduke, and Joseph Vickery. A goal for this group is to eventually obtain DNA test results from descendants of John Vickery's other three grandsons: Luke, James, and William Vickery. The confirmed haplogroup for Group 010 Vickery is R-M269 > L51 > P310 > U106 > Z2265 > BY30097 > FTT8 > Z381 > L48 > Z9 > Z30 > Z27 > Z345 > Z2 > Z7 > Z31 > FGC902 > FGC910 > FGC904 > CTS10893 > CTS4099 > Z38460 > PH1477 > PH3080 > FTA33930 > BY35842 > BY35444 > BY57251. This group has tested positive for the U106 Germanic Branch, an R1b subclade, which reaches its highest frequencies in North Sea areas such as southern and eastern England, the Netherlands and Denmark. It has been found in Western Europe with highest frequency of about 35% in the north of the Netherlands and in Denmark. Due to its distribution, this subclade is often associated with the Anglo-Saxon migrations to England. In addition, Group 010 is positive for the Z381 subclade common to approximately 9% of the population of Flanders, which historically extended beyond Belgium into parts of France (French Flanders) and the Netherlands (Zeelandic Flanders).
This project has several other Vickery Y-DNA groups, with alternate spellings, listed in the Y-DNA Results Chart. These are single-member groups with the following spellings: Vickers (Middlesex, UK), Vicary (Sussex, UK), and Veklich (Ukraine). We await more members with test results to help expand these groups.
We encourage you to join us in our discoveries. Genetic testing with FTDNA is an opportunity to learn more about your origins and ancestry.
