About us

The VA-1600s project focuses on early pre-1700 Virginia families. There are separate projects for mtDNA and yDNA.

This project is for Surname (Paternal - yDNA) participants. We welcome all direct line descendants who trace their paternal line back to Virginia in the 1600s.

>> Applicants must identify their Virginia ancestor by name and approximate years of birth and death, and location.

------ Not everyone has a genealogy that connects with an early Virginia ancestor through documentation. When this happens: provide an explanation as to why or how you believe you connect to an early Virginia male ancestor.

Virginia of the 1600s is defined as made up of the eight original Shires (counties) and the Northern Neck / Old Rappahanock County.

Accawmack (Northampton), Charles City, Charles River (York), Elizabeth City, Henrico, James City, Warrosquyoake (Isle of Wight) and Warwick River (Warwick); the Chickacoan District (Northumberland); and counties are Gloucester, Lancaster, New Kent, Surry, Westmoreland, Accomack, Stafford, Middlesex, New Norfolk, Upper Norfolk, Lower Norfolk, Norfolk, Nansemond, Princess Ann, King and Queen, Essex, and Richmond.
