About us

My interest in Uttley is tangential. I won't describe it here, but having access to the project is helpful to my personal research. I'd like to see it grow.

Judging from a post at ancestry.com, the project was started by John Uttley in 2007. This was his announcement at the time:

I have just started an Uttley/ Utley surname project at Family Tree and wish to encourage males of either surname to consider YDNA testing to establish their male ancestry. The theory is propounded in The House of Uttley by the Huckles that all of either surname are descended from a John Utley who acquired the surname when he moved from Utley near Keighley, Yorkshire, England to Heptonstall, Yorkshire in the mid fourteenth century. The spelling was changed in the mid eighteenth century by a parish clerk at Heptonstall so those with one l come from ancestors who had left Heptonstall by then. I am directly descended from a parish clerk in Heptonstall just after then who kept the Stag Inn there and was also a glazier.

I'm happy to answer any questions.
