About us

Welcome!

This is a project to help draw together those who test positive for the SNP known as U198 (aka M467, S29) or for any of its "downstream" SNPs. Our haplogroup is currently known as R-U198. Our scope is YDNA only. This project is run as a philosophical/scientific project by unpaid volunteers with a scientific background and we try to deal with our members on a one-to-one basis as much as possible.
Like the tulips in our banner above, R-U198 is believed to have originated much further East than where the majority of its members are found today.

VERY IMPORTANT - MEMBERS SHOULD NOT ORDER THE "R1b-M343 Backbone SNP Pack"

VERY IMPORTANT - because of the tremendous range of tests now available we strongly recommend seeking advice from John or Chris before placing any YDNA order.

Please see our main project website for full details and interesting information on this group:

We have extensive knowledge of the structure within our haplogroup. This is incorporated in the Family Tree DNA "haplotree" and shown on our main project website here:

We have a Facebook page with further information, links and discussion here:

Those who have tested positive ("derived") for M467, S29, U198 or the equivalent (an "A" at rs17222279 in the 23andme test, for example) are welcome to join with their Y-STR marker results (e.g. Y-DNA 37, 67 or 111). U198 itself is a point mutation at position 14727619 on the Y-chromosome in which a "G" has changed to an "A".

A POSITIVE SNP TEST IS REQUIRED FOR MEMBERSHIP. IF YOU HAVE ANY DOUBTS OR QUERIES PLEASE CONTACT JOHN BY EMAIL AND HE WILL BE HAPPY TO ADVISE YOU.

Important points to note:

1. If you want accurate information on this haplogroup you should talk to us directly

2. We choose to display Y-STR results, SNP test results and other non-private data as a courtesy to our members and other bona fide researchers. Please respect our project, its members, its data and its unpaid, volunteer administrators at all times

3. All those who have been sub-grouped in this project are U198+ regardless of what is showing in the haplogroup designation or the SNP test results. This FTDNA website displays only FTDNA tests and many of us tested our identifying SNP with another company

4. U198+ status is very easy to predict, for most men, from the FTDNA YDNA 37 marker results with high confidence; from 67 markers with very high confidence and from 111 markers with almost complete confidence. Whilst we still require an actual SNP test for confirmation, it will save most of our people a little money to
talk to us before ordering further testing.

"Science isn't supposed to be kept in bags, no more than cats" - Maurice Wilkins responds to the suggestion that he "let the cat out of the bag" by allowing James Watson to see a key X-ray diffraction image of DNA, taken by Rosalind Franklin.
