Notes

County and town names are as used on the 1881 census, and may not necessarily correlate with modern names and borders. Where a Scottish county is now known by a significantly different name, the modern name is shown in brackets. Welsh counties are shown in both English and Welsh names.

The Total Occurrences tables show which counties and towns contained the highest number of people with the surname TYLER. This is obviously biased towards counties and towns that have more people in them overall, but it does show where the majority of people called TYLER lived at the time of the 1881 census.

The Frequency tables show which counties and towns had the highest proportion of people with the surname TYLER. These are the places where you would be most likely to find someone called TYLER,if you picked people at random from the population.

<!--[if !supportLists]-->·                 <!--[endif]-->The Total column shows the total number of people in that county or town with this surname. For example, there were 87 people called TYLER in Rutland at the time of the 1881 census.

<!--[if !supportLists]-->·                 <!--[endif]-->The Frequencycolumn shows the percentage of people in this county or town with this surname. For example, a frequency of 0.4056 in Rutland means that 0.4056% of the peoplein Rutland on census day were called TYLER.

<!--[if !supportLists]-->·                 <!--[endif]-->The Index column shows the relative probability of finding someone called TYLER in this county or town, compared with the probability of finding them anywhere in Britain as a whole. An index of 1 means that if you pick someone at random from this county or town, you have exactly the same probability of picking someone called TYLER if you picked at random from the whole of the UK. If the index is higher than 1, then you are more likely to find someone called TYLER here than if you picked from the UK as a whole, and if it's lower then you are less likely. The actual figure shows the level of probability - for example, a figure of 2 would indicate that you are twice as likely to find someone called TYLER here than in the UK as a whole, and 10 would make it ten times as likely. The value of 13.7389 in Rutland means that you are 13.7389 times as likely to find someone with the surname of TYLER in Rutland than you would be in the whole of the UK.

The maximum Index values tend to be higher for towns than counties, as a single extended family in a small town can comprise a significant proportion of the total population. For less common surnames, it's quite likely that all the residents of a small town who shared that name were related.

Notes

Total is thetotal number of people with that surname.

Rank is the position in the list of names ordered by total (eg, a rank of 1 means that it's the most common name, and a rank of 10 means it's the tenth most common, etc).

Frequency is the percentage of people with that surname.

Per million people is the number of people with that surname per million of the population.

'N/A' indicates that we don't have data for this name (usually because it's quite uncommon and our stats don't go down that far). It doesn't mean that there's no-one with that name at all!

For less common surnames, the figures get progressively less reliable the fewer holders of that name there are. This data is aggregated from several public lists, and some stats are interpolated from known values. The margin of error is well over 100% at the rarest end of the table!

For less common surnames, the frequency and "per million" values may be 0 even though there are people with that name. That's because they represent less than one in a million of the population, which ends up as 0 after rounding.

It's possible for a surname to gain in rank and/or total while being less common per million people (or vice versa) as there are now more surnames in the USA as a result of immigration. In mathematical terms, the tail has gotten longer, with a far larger number of less common surnames.

Tyler

Posted on 17novembre 2010 by HeraldrysInstitute

The name ‘Tyler’ originates from England. It is derived from the occupational name for a maker or layer of tiles, derived from the agent derivative of the MiddleEnglish word ’tile’ (from the Old English word ‘tigele’, from the Latin word ‘tegula’, a derivative of ‘tegere’ meaning to cover). In the Middle Ages tiles were widely used in floors and pavements, and to a lesser extent in roofing, where they did not really come in to their own until the 16th century.Variants: ‘Tylor’, ‘Tiller’, Compiled information from Historical and Private archive’s has confirmed that the name ‘Tyler’ and or it’s variant’s, dates as far back as the 14th century were a ‘Wat Tyler’, (died 1381) , the leader of the English Peasant’s Revolt, is referred to in Thomas Walsingham´s Chronicon Angliae as ‘Walterus Helier’, which suggests that the name was not a hereditary surname but simply a refernce to his occupation. The exact period of settlement in North America has not been definately determined but Information extracted from Public and Civil registry archive’s confirm that one of the first settlers was a certain ‘Job Tyler’, aged 20, believed to have been from Shropshire, England, emigrated to North America in 1638, and settled in 1639 at Andover, Massachsetts. He died in 1700 having fathered eight children. ‘Tyler’ is the 446th’ most common surname in North America.
