About us
The Trinder surname is considered to be of Anglo-Saxon origin and is probably an occupational name for a (wool or cotton) spinner and comes from the large wheel that is a feature of the many different types of spinning wheels.
A Dictionary of Surnames (Hanks & Hodges, 1988) says:
Trinder, English occupational name for a braider or a spinner from an ancient derivative of ME [Middle English] trend(en) to twist, plait. OE [old English] trendan to turn around, roll.
Ref: Hanks, P. & Hodges, F., A Dictionary of Surnames, 1988, OUP see p541
An alternative but associated theme is that the name comes from a "maker of trindles" with trindles being the "felloes of a wheel".
Halliwell in his 1852 Dictionary of Archaic and Provincial Words etc has these definitions
· TRINDLE. A wheel. Derb. [Derbyshire]
· TRINDLES. (1) The dung of goats, &c. (2) The felloes of a wheel. North. [Northamptonshire]
· TRINDLE-TAIL. A species of dog. (I guess it has a curly tail. GVB)
Ref: Halliwell, J.O. 1852 Dictionary of Archaic and Provincial Words, Obsolete Phrases, Proverbs, and Ancient Customs, From The Fourteenth Century" in two volumes. Vol I. A – I, VOL II. J – Z. (for private circulation only) see Vol. II page 889
Webster’s 1945 version is as follows -
· Trindle, n.Same as Trundle (p1835)
· Trundle, v.t.; trundled, pt., pp.: trundling, ppr. [Origin, obscure from an Anglo-Saxon verb trindan, to roll, akin to tryndel, acircle
· Trundle, n, [ Also spelt trendle, trindle, akin to AS. Tryndel, a circle]
Ref: Webster, Noel et al 1945 Webster’s New Twentieth Century Dictionary of the English Language (unabridged) etc etc pp 1835 & 1843/1844
Unfortunately, Helliwell (1852) does not include a definition for felloe (possibly because the word was still in use), but Webster(1945) has this to say
· Felloe, n.see Felly
Then
· Felly, felloe, n. 1. One of the curved pieces of wood, which when joined together by dowel pins, form the circumference or circular rim of a wheel into which the spokes are fitted. 2. The rim of a wheel
Ref: Webster, Noel et al 1945 Webster’s New Twentieth Century Dictionary of the English Language(unabridged) etc etc p645.
Most wheel designs used several short felloes per wheel, with each felloe being cut to shape rather than being bent. However, sometimes there were only two felloes per wheel, with each of them made of a long piece of wood bent into a semicircular shape. In the case of carriage or wagon and similar wheels an iron rim was often fitted onto the outside of the felloes.
Some writers state that the term is derived from the Olde English pre 7th Century trendan, to turn round, roll and/or Middle English trend(en),to twist. Trendelyn, as with a round thynge, giving as their source a medieval dictionary – unfortunately I have not yet found that source.
Trindade as a surname - has been suggested to me as being a Portuguese equivalent.
A Dictionary of Surnames (Hanks & Hodges, 1988) says:
· Trindade, Portuguese: religious by-name adopted in honour of the Holy Trinity, and given in particular to children born on Trinity Sunday. The name is from the Portuguese trindade trinity (LL trinitase, gen, trinitatis, a derivative of tres three)
Ref: Hanks, P. & Hodges, F., A Dictionary of Surnames, 1988, OUP see p541
While Trindade is certainly Portuguese, it seems to have been a modern introduction into the UK. Prior to and including the 1911 Census, there are only two mentions of the name in the various census returns – these are
1. in the 1881 Census where Lowrence M Trindade, born in Goa and a Portuguese subject, aged 31, a band member on HMS Evryalus.
2. In the 1861 census, where Charles Trindade, born in Barking, Essex, aged 4 years was the grandson of Susan (indecipherable surname) age 76, the widow of a labourer. There are no other household members recorded. Presumably, Susan’s daughter had married a Portuguese man with the Trindade name.
The earliest Trindade life event in the UK recorded in civil records are
· Births – A total of 96 with the first in 1962 with 54 of those births taking place in the 21st C.
· Marriages – A total of 62 with the first in 1963.
· Deaths – A total of 9 with the first in 1872,with the next not being recorded until 1971
