About us
The purpose of this project is to be a part of the research of settlement history of the Torne River Valley. And to connect people, who share their ancestors that are from the Torne River valley (Tornionjokilaakso, Tornedal), located between Finland and Sweden.
All surnames are welcomed!
Projektin tarkoituksena on olla selvittämässä Tornionjokilaakson asutushistoriaa DNA-tutkimuksen avulla. Se pyrkii myös edistämään Torniojokilaaksosta kotoisin olevien sukujen yhteyksiä.

About the area
Torne Valley or Torne River Valley means the area located in border of Finland and Sweden. In Finnish it is called "Tornionlaakso" ("The Valley of Torne") or "Tornionjokilaakso" ("The Valley of the Torne River")1. In Swedish it is "Tornedalen" ("Torne Valley").
Below you can see the map of the area. On border of Finland and Sweden there are actually two rivers. Up in the north there is the Muonio River (Muoniojoki in Finnish). It goes to Kolari and there combines to Torne River. Torne River begins in Swedish Lappland, near the border of Norway. In this project we share the idea of the phrase "Tornionlaakso" as its wider meaning: it covers the land border of Finland and Sweden and also the river valley of Torne in the Swedish side.
Some people like to call this area as "Meänmaa" ("Our land" in the local Finnish dialect).

1) In Finnish there is also a name "Torniolaakso" (literally "The Torne Valley"). That means a administrative area that covers only muncipals of Pello and Ylitornio on the Finnish side of the border. The word "Tornio" means "Torne" while "Tornion" is a genetive form of "Torne", meaning "of Tornio.
