About us
It is commonly believed that the progenitor of the Sutfin/Sutphen/Sutphin families in the United States was Dirck Jansen van Zutphen, who immigrated from Holland to this country circa 1676. This project is dedicated to connecting people who may trace back to Dirck. However, anyone with the various surname spellings such as Sutphin, Sutphen, Sutfin, Van Sutphin, Zutphen, and many others... is welcome to participate.
Early on many of these families were of limited formal education and could not read or write. Until the early 1800's many families still spoke Dutch and during census times spellings were english translations, thus the variations in spelling of the surname. If you have a Sutfin, Sutphen, or Sutphin ancestor you are welcome to join us in our research.
To participate meaningfully, testees will need to share their direct male line ancestry back to the earliest known SUTPHIN/etc., in the form of a pedigree. If you wish to help others in the cost of getting tested you may you may donate at www.familytreedna.com/contribution.html
We also have an email group and a web site called SCOL (Sutfin/Sutphen/Sutphin Cousins Online). To learn more about this resource please visit:
