About us

This is a surname Project which focuses on the Sproat family (and all variants) of southern Scotland, mainly in the Kirkcudbright, Dumfries, and Wigtown areas. They have been in this area for the last 700-800 years at least, and more Y DNA research is needed to clarify all the lines (and the various surname variants). Branches of this family can be found around the world, mainly in the United Kingdom, North America, and Australasia. There is also a second Sproat family that has been identified through testing, and appears to be a Germanic family that just so happened to adopt the same spelling/surname in North America. The roots of this family have been found to be in Pennsylvania in the early 1700s, and has branches throughout the USA, including Hawaii. Members of this family are also encouraged to join.
