The State of South Australia

Brief history of settlement
The Australian state, South Austrlia, is located centrally on the southern side of the Australian continent. It is bordered by each of the other Australian states and the Northern Territory.  The state was first inhabited by Aboriginal people for many tens of thousands of years and we acknowldege them, their elders and their descendants as traditional owners and custodians of the land.  Although early Dutch explorers (for example, Nuyts) sailed along the far west coast of the state in the early 17th century, it was not until the British explorer, Matthew Flinders, and French explorer, Nicholas Baudin, mapped in detail most of the coast line in the first few years of the 19th century.  Flinders' reports of seals attracted sealers, some of whom soon after established a small settlement on Kangaroo Island.

The first organised European settlement was through the South Australian Company and occurred late in 1836. Colonisation did not involve transportation of convicts.  Soon after in 1838, Lutheran German people, mostly refugees from Prussia, began arriving and by 1914 they made up about 1 in 10 of the population.  In 1848 and 1849, three ships (the Roman Emporer, Inconstant and the Elgin) arrived carrying 620 orphan girls from Ireland.  When minerals were discovered, people with a mining heritage, especially from Cornwall and Devon, England, but also other parts of Britiain and Europe, settled in several areas such as Moonta, Kadina, Kapunda and Burra.  Many left later for the Victorian goldfields.  There has also been a history of close relationship of South Australians with the New South Wales mining town of Broken Hill from the 1880s.

After 1945, the population grew with people originating from many European nations and later Vietnamese, other South-East and South Asians and more recently Africans have settled in the State.
