About us

This is an invitation for all people with a long genealogical history in South Africa to join this group and find how we all are related - or not. Please join in.

Prospective members who had mtDNA tests done through National Geographic’s Genographic Project or through FamilyTree DNA (FTDNA), can join the South African mtDNA project. “Because FTDNA performs the testing for National Geographic’s Genographic project, they allow transfers from that service at no extra charge and with no need to retest the samples.”

Sorenson (SMGF) results (and other labs): “Because FTDNA cannot attest to the accuracy of the results obtained through Sorensen and because their panel of Y-DNA markers differs from that of FTDNA, these samples will have to be retested in FTDNA’s lab before the results can be added to the FTDNA database.”

Therefore three possibilities exist (A, B, or C):
Test performed through National Geographic se Genographic Project:
Your sample was analysed by FTDNA, but your results are in the National Geographic database. You must first transfer your results to the FTDNA database. This transfer is free, and FTDNA offers many more advanced tests which you may choose to have performed, if you are interested.

A) How to transfer your results from the Genographic Project to FTDNA.
1) Go to the Genographic website and log in with your participant id.

2) At the bottom of the first page, there is a paragraph with the heading: "WHAT ELSE CAN I DO WITH MY RESULTS?" Click on "Learn more >" in the paragraph text.

3) The next page has this sentence at the top of the page: "you can obtain additional information related to your genealogy at no extra cost". Read the "agreement", and if you agree, click on "I agree" and then on "Continue".

4) On the next page, fill out the form "Adding your record to Family Tree DNA", and click on "Continue".

5) Follow any further instructions on your screen.

B) Once your results are in the FTDNA database (i.e. you have followed the above steps, or you have been tested by FTDNA directly), you can join the South African mtDNA project without being retested or paying any fees. Two alternatives:

1) Go to the following FTDNA webpage https://www.familytreedna.com/public/SouthAfrican-mtDNA and click on "REQUEST TO JOIN THIS GROUP".

2) Alternatively, go to your own results page on FTDNA, and click on the "join" icon on the left hand side. Under the heading "mt GEOGRAPHICAL PROJECTS", click on the letter "S", and choose the project "South African mtDNA". On the next page, click on “Join".

C) If you have NOT been tested through either National Geographic’s Genographic Project or through FamilyTree DNA (FTDNA), you can order a new mtDNA test at a special discount as a prospective member of the South African mtDNA project. Go to the following link: https://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=South_African_mtDNA.

The project administrator will add you to the appropriate subgroup (Africa, Asia, Europe) as soon as possible. Results are classified into accepted regions, as can be found on Wikipedia, for example: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haplogroup.
Members are encouraged to add their Maternal Ancestor name, origin and date of birth to their profiles as far as possible to further research.

Thank you for your participation.
