About us

The Sonksen project has just been launched (Christmas-time 2005). The project administrator is Peter Sonksen, a retired Professor of Medicine (Endocrinology) living near Winchester in Hampshire in the South of England. We can see Southampton from our driveway - we are 600ft above sea level on top of the South Downs (the word "Downs" in English really means "Ups" as it refers to a range of chalk hills that runs along the South Coast of England from Winchester to Beachy Head).

I was born in Hamburg in 1936 of a German Father (Hans Alwyn Richard Sonksen) and English Mother. They got into some sort of trouble with the Nazi regime (they were not Jewish) and fled to England. My Father was killed shortly after in a road accident, so I was brought up by my Mother and we lost contact with my German roots. My Father's sister (Inge) survived the war in Brussels, Belgium. We met shortly after the war but she died prematurely from TB. I have a son and a daughter (both doctors) and they each have 3 children. I have been married twice; the children are from my first marriage. In my second marriage, Sue and I have been very happily married for >25 years. I have been waiting until retirement to investigate my roots and I have started this project with that in mind but now, because our first two Y-DNAs do not match, it's clear that the scope is somewhat broader and we're looking at a tribe with more than one clan! How many clans are there? Do they all originate in the same
