About us

We have multiple objectives for the Shores surname project. All indications point to possible port of entries by early Shores families to colonial America somewhere between Boston and Philadelphia prior to 1775. To support this theory, current available records indicate multiple Shores/Shore/Schoor branches with ties to Shores families before 1820 in Kentucky, Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey, Tennessee, North Carolina, Georgia, Massachusetts, New York, Vermont, Alabama and Florida.

Additionally, we find extremely high concentrations of Shores families in Illinois, Arkansas, Georgia and Missouri in census reports by the middle of the 19th century. More participants from this area are needed.

This project and its participants is designed to confirm or deny our respective paper trails. We are happy to share our research and family photographs with new or prospective participants.

The Shores surname project is open to anyone who may believe that they have possible family ties and wish to confirm their research via the y-chromosome test. We encourage you to make aware any of your fellow Shores researchers of the open invitation to participate in this surname project. Spelling variations of the Shores surname project currently include: Scheur, Schoor, Schorr, Schor, Shoyer, Shores, Shore, Shoars, Shouse, Schoors.

Lastly, all of the y-line tests are conducted using a simple cheek swab test in your home. This test is then processed within the professional laboratory relationships created by Family Tree DNA in Tucson, Arizona, at the University of Arizona. Please know that 100% of the cost incurred for processing and analyzing your test goes to Family Tree DNA. There is no charge for your participation in the Shores surname project.
