Research at PRONI, Belfast, Ireland
by Audrey (Shields) Hancock
General James SHIEL, b Altmore, County Tyrone (Northern Ireland) on 6 May 1806. He was eldest of three sons of Charles SHIEL and ??? McDONNELL/MacDONALD/MacDONNELL.
The mother was of Scotch extraction descended from MacDonnels of Glencoe in Scotland who escaped the massacre of 1692, crossed the channel, and settled in Cookstown, Co. Tyrone, Ireland. The other two sons were Daniel and Patrick. They (James, Daniel, Patrick) said to be great-gs/o Daniel SHIEL (aka SHIELDS/O'SHIEL). James immigrated to the U.S. where he died in MO years later; Daniel d 1888 at 80y; Patrick d 16 Oct 1890 at 80y. Patrick lived his whole life in the house in which James was born in Altmore, Co. Tyrone, Ireland. It also appears that Daniel also lived his entire life at Altmore.
CHARLES SHIEL d when James was six years old, leaving the widow and children in rather affluent circumstances. This family was Catholic. It was desired that the children be educated at a Catholic school, but none being available at the time left them without a Catholic school to attend. However, Mrs. SHIEL's brother (a Catholic priest, Father McDonnell) unable to officiate at priestly duties due to paralysis, appears to have been instructor to the boys for a time. It is said that Father McDonnell had been one of the first professors at Maynooth College.
It states that "The young Shiel family had an uncle, James Shiel, who live in Charleston, U.S.A." I am assuming then that this James was a brother to Charles (father of [Gen.] James, Daniel, and Patrick). And...this James Shiels/Shields does not appear to Audrey to be the Hon. James Shields of Butler Co., OH who in some histories is said to be the uncle of Gen. James Shields.
When (Gen.) James was about 11 years it states his Uncle James came back to Ireland to visit. Uncle James was also an educated man, and taught in a high school/college in Charleston; and he was a military man who imparted his military ideals to his nephew, James. While visiting Uncle James learned of young James fluency in French, Latin and Greek, and promised that he would be his heir when he came to America. It appears that Uncle James had no issue. After 3 months Uncle James returned to the U.S. and is said to have continued correspondence with his young nephew.
The record indicates that (Gen.) James Shiel went to school for a few months at Ballyshannon, County Donegal, when he was visiting a friend and distant relative, Dr. Shiel. [It does not indicate who this Dr. Shiel was.] James also learned sword exercise and military drill from an old soldier of the British Army. He read military tactic books. James emigrated to U.S. in 1826; landed in Montreal; wrote his uncle in Charleston, but not hearing from him, gave up any attempt to correspond further...but in the meantime his uncle had died from yellow fever.
After this he sailed on various ships and voyages which took him here and there, once back to Scotland then back to NY. He was injured when blown off a sailyard and spent 3 months recovery for that ordeal, and eventually this set him on his military course out West.

4. HON. JAMES SHIELDS of Butler County, Ohio (1763-1831), a very well educated man & politician, lived in Morgan Twp., Butler County, OH. He is said to have come to the U.S. in 1791 from Northern Ireland, settled in Maryland briefly, and went on to VA before coming to Butler Co., OH permanently. His father is said to have been THOMAS SHIELDS who remained in Ireland. [Other histories indicate that Hon. James SHIELDS was an uncle of Gen. James SHIELDS, but records found in Ireland do not validate this position, although Gen. James did have an Uncle James SHIELDS (His will is given below) who apparently died without issue.] Hon. James SHIELDS coming at possibly the same time as the above immigrant, Daniel Shields b 1741 and wife Mary, creates some possibility that Daniel b 1741 (Group 1) and this James SHIELDS were somehow related. The family of Daniel SHIELDS lived in Lemon Twp., Butler Co., OH before removing to Preble Co., OH. Relationship, if any, among the three men is unknown at this time.

8. ROBERT SHIELDS born about 1749 in Ireland (according to 1850 census, Taylor County, (W)VA, and died 17 Jan 1857 in Harrison Co., (W)VA. Wife's name is unknown, but perhaps Jane ARMSTRONG (no proof). Robert was enumerated in Harrison Co., VA in 1810, 1820, 1830, 1840, and in Taylor Co., VA in 1850. (Taylor County, (W)VA was formed from Harrison County, (W)VA.) History of Taylor County, (W)VA, Volume 1, by Charles Brinkman, page 37, published in "The Grafton Sentinel" beginning in April 1939: "The Census of 1850" states:
"Zachary, the son of Dr. and Mrs. Amos Payne, was the youngest child, while Robert Shields, who occupation was given as a 'cutter of hoop-poles' was the oldest man in Taylor County in 1850, having been born in 1751."
Robert was the oldest person listed on the 1850 census in Taylor County. He was 99 years old. Robert's death record from Harrison County, WV states that he was 107 years old at the time of his death, 17 January 1857. The information was supplied by his daughter. No name was given for her, but it was probably Sarah (Shields) Warren, who had been living close by in 1850. Robert and wife had at least one daughter, Sarah Shields, born 26 Sep 1797. Sarah married Abijah Warren. Robert was probably the father of James Shields (ca 1786 - after 1850) who married Elizabeth Dillon in 1821 Harrison Co., (W)VA.
Testees having the same Y-DNA as believed descendants of Robert Shields will be found on another chart when descendants are determined, unless there is a determination that his descendants possess the same Y-DNA as another testee. As yet, we have no testees who declare their ancestor to be this Robert Shields.
