About us
The Shields Surname Project was launched in July 2003 to explore the ancestral origins and connections of families bearing the Shields name and its many variants. Founded during the early days of genetic genealogy, the project aimed to overcome gaps in historical documentation by using Y-DNA testing to trace paternal lineages and uncover relationships that traditional records alone could not confirm.
Over the past two decades, the project has grown in scope and sophistication. In addition to Y-DNA testing, it now welcomes autosomal DNA (atDNA) participants, enabling descendants from all branches of the family tree to contribute to the research. This expansion has helped uncover connections across maternal and collateral lines, resolve misattributed parentage cases, and strengthen ties among distant cousins.
Today, the Shields Surname Project is a collaborative effort among researchers and descendants worldwide who share a common interest in Shields heritage. Participants contribute not only genetic data but also historical records, family stories, and regional insights that help build a richer, more accurate picture of Shields ancestry.
The success of the project depends on:
- Y-DNA testing from male participants with Shields ancestry
- Autosomal DNA matches that support broader kinship analysis
- Documented lineages including dates, locations, and source citations
- Community collaboration to resolve lineage questions, refine haplogroup structures, and connect distant branches
Whether you're just beginning your genealogical journey or seeking to break through long-standing brick walls, the Shields Surname Project offers a space to share discoveries, deepen understanding, and preserve family history for future generations.
