About us

We welcome men with surname Schieffelin (or variant, see below), men and women with a known Schieffelin (or variant) ancestor in any line, and men with a Big Y test that is a near match to any project member. "Schieffelin" Surname Variants can include: Scheuffelin, Scheufelen, Schaufelein, Schauffelin, Scheffelin, Schauffele, Scheifelin, Schenfelein, Schenflein, Schoyffelin, etc. or additionally those who have been tested and may have a close genetic link to the surname. Project Note: This is a Y-DNA project, thus the primary focus is on male line descendants taking a Y-Chromosome DNA (Y-DNA) test. The individual who tests are typically males who wants to check direct paternal line (father's father's father's...) with a Y-DNA12, Y-DNA37, Y-DNA67, or Y-DNA111 test and who has one of the surnames listed for the project (or a close variant). Females do not carry their father's Y-DNA. Females who would like to check their father's direct paternal line can have a male relative with his surname order a Y-DNA test. Females can also order an mtDNA test such as the mtDNAPlus test or the mtFullSequence test and participate in an mtDNA project. Both men and women may take our autosomal Family Finder test to discover recent relationships across all family lines. As a surname, Schieffelin and variants may have separate origins. To delineate each separate origin we welcome cousins. Cousin subgroups are limited to 2–3 members with Big Y tests who are most closely related to a Schieffelin or variant. Cousins are recruited from Schieffelin project members' match lists and other FTDNA projects. Many families have genealogical brick walls at migration events. The high potential for an occupational surname to change with migration makes our brick walls even stronger. Working together, we can leverage DNA to break through our walls.
