About us
The names Santry and Sauntry (and, indeed, Santery, Seantry, Santrey, Shantry, Santury, and Sentry) have, historically, been interchangeable – it must be borne in mind not only that the spelling of English words was unstandarised prior to the mid-eighteenth century, but that Sauntry/Santry is an anglicised surname – a phonetic approximation of an earlier, Gaelic, form. Thus, individual members of the family are frequently recorded under several versions of the surname, and this not only in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century records, but until the early decades of the twentieth century. By and large, however, Santry is now by far the more common spelling in Ireland, whereas the spelling Sauntry continues to be employed by many branches of the family that live in North America.
The family is not numerous. The 1901 Census of Ireland returned one hundred and five people surnamed Santry, thirteen Santery, eight Sauntry, and one Shantry. Of these, all Sauntrys were both born in, and residing in, county Cork. So, too were all Santerys; and all but two Santrys returned in the census were living in county Cork, the exceptions being Michael Santry and his wife Katherine, who were living in College Green, Killarney, Co. Kerry; however, Michael stated he had, in fact, been born in county Cork. The 1911 Census of Ireland records ninety-eight people of the name Santry, seven of the name Sauntry, and eight of the name Santery.
The 1841 Census of England and Wales records forty-two members of the extended family. Of these, one household of Sauntry – two parents and two children, all born in Ireland – lived in Wales. Of the remainder, thirty-one members of the extended family (representing ten households) were named Santry, and five members (living in one household) were named Santury: in each case the head of the household was stated to have been born in Ireland.
The 1841 Census of Ireland has not survived, however, it is remarkable that, of those of the extended family who lived in Ireland in the mid-nineteenth century, all were living in county Cork. Indeed – and even more remarkably, with the exception of those living in the market centres of Cork city and in the towns of Kinsale and Bandon, all members of the family were living in the West Riding of the county.
Primary Sources
Since the destruction of Ireland’s nineteenth-century census returns, the earliest, and most complete public records that record the name and location of members of the family are the Tithe Applotment Books (1824-39) – which largely record those who held at least one acre of land, but others were occasionally included – and Griffith’s Primary Valuation of Tenements (1851-3), which includes a list of each household in Ireland. The following is a record of the members of the family to be found in each:
