just an update, someone advised me to use the family finder advanced matches and look for close ish matches 1-3 cousin basis roughly. i have found i am related to these matches within this group.
I started my genealogy 25 years ago, and felt alone in doing it. All I could do was work the paper trail upwards, and sift through the massive surname data downwards. Then, FTDNA came along. I progressively tested up to BigY and saw the matches that clearly indicated a family migration from nearly a single parent. It even matched the "story" of the immigration compiled by someone in the late 19th century, although, I was unable to exactly match the related people into a tree since no one had definite data going back far enough.

I believe this is the oldest photo I have of my Robinson line, taken Aug 4, 1907. Front center is my 3rd great grandfather, Norton Fuller Robinson b. 26 Dec 1830, Southampton, Suffolk, New York. He married Phebe Rosamund Penny who is sitting beside him. My 2nd great grandfather is in the back row, 3rd from the left. Arlo Hale Robinson who was born Dec 19, 1878, in Capioma, Nemaha, Kansas (now Sabetha). The family line had been in Suffolk Co., New York since the 1600s but I do not know where they came from before that. In about 1859 my branch left NY and went to Henry Co, Illinois (1859-1869), followed by a brief stay in Georgia 1870-1871, but by 1873 they were in Kansas where lots of family remain, though my branch left for Colorado in about 1908.

My lineage for the Robinsons is maternal and starts with my mom: Amanda Kelly (Roebuck); my grandmother: Albertha "Bertha" Lomac (Kelly); my g-grandmother: Grace Robinson/Roberts (Lomac); my g-g-grandmother: Frances Crawley (Robinson); my g-g-g-grandmother: Henrietta Crawley; and that's where my search is at a standstill.
