This group is open to all who have a paper trail or oral history link to Rathlin Island, or close genetic matches to existing members.  We are trying to concentrate on ancestry who lived/procreated on Rathlin from the 1600's on.

This group supports both Y-chromosome testing as well as mtDNA.

Y-chromosomes, are passed down through their Paternal ancestry line (Father, GrandFather, GreatGrandFather...  ). Such testing can go back dozens of generations to determine how far back two male individuals share a common ancestor.  A Y-37 marker or greater test is advised to get meaningful results.

Mitochondrial (mtDNA) testing is also available for Ladies ( and Men ) who desire to explore commonalities of their Mitochondrial DNA, as passed down through their Maternal ancestry line. 

If you have taken an ancestry DNA test from other sources, it’s possible that you can upload that to FamilyTreeDNA to join the group.  Y-DNA tests conducted by Sorenson's laboratory (this includes tests performed by Ancestry, GeneTree, National Geographic’s’ Genomic Project and Sorenson's SMGF), can be uploaded.  mtDNA testing might not be able to be uploaded to FamilyTreeDNA due to different markers being tested by different labs.  Check the FamilyTreeDNA FAQ Section to see what can and cannot be uploaded. The results must be posted to this site by the owner of the DNA testing.  I personally had a ten year old NationalGeographic Genomic Study test uploaded, and then later upgraded from a Y-12marker to a Y-111 marker test. Specifics on the tests are at the FamilyTreeDNAweb site.  If you have the written test results from a prior Y-Chromosome test, you can manually enter it for free at a web site YSearch.org to compare to others. The YSearch data is not linked to the FamilyTree Rathlin site
