About us

Initial test results show the family of Samuel Raskin (b. c. 1840) of Slutsk, Russia, to have a Western European haplogroup type of R1bc10. This haplogroup may have had its origins in the La Tene Celts, an ancient Celtic tribe living in modern Switzerland. Some of their descendants went to Germany and one of them may be the ancestor of all eastern European Jews with this haplogroup. (There is a Family Tree DNA project and a number of websites related to this haplogroup.)

The closest match to this family appears to be another Slutsk family with a different surname, indicating that the common ancestor lived before surnames were compulsory among eastern European Jews.
