About us
This is the official Ramazanoglu surname project site of the descendants of the Turkish Ramadanids Dynasty. The Ramadanids ruled Middle Turkey (Cukorova with capital Adana) in successions from 1352 to 1698. More info can be found at ramazanoglu2013.blogspot.com
They are descendants of Ramadan Bey son of Yuregir, Chief of the Yuregir Clan and of the Oguzlar Ucok Tribe.
After the Turkish family surname law of 1934-1936, some family members adopted different surname. Prior to 1936, the Paternal surname of the sons of Ramadan was Ramadanzade (or Ramazanzade), Zade means a "royal son of", as opposed to Oglu, meaning "son of". In 1934, the Turkish government first disallowed the use of Ramazanzade and Ramazanoglu, so many family members had to chose different last names. Some just dropped off the "Zade" suffix and became Ramadan or Ramazan.
While others selected different last names such as "Arash" (from Marash, where one of the Sons of Ramazanoglu was a Wali/Governor and they settled there), others selected the family name Kupad (from their ancestor Kupad Pasa son of Halil Pasa Ramazanoglu). Later in 1936, the Turkish government allowed use of Ramazanoglu and Ramazanogullari for last names, and many reapplied to select this last name. However, the family name law also allowed anyone to select those last names, so many non related family members became Ramazanoglu, which made it difficult to know who is a real Ramazanoglu and who is not.
It is noted that two maternal related families Isfandiarzade and HassanPasaZade have also switched to adopting the Ramazanoglu family surname, even though they do not belong to the Paternal lineage of Ramazanoglu.
