Project goals
These vary for different participants, but include:
• To discover relationships among POTTS families (which include similar or related surnames, e.g., POTT, SPOTTS, etc.) currently in the U.S. and abroad.
• To help to determine the ethnic and national origins of POTTS families during the last millenium.
• To help determine related families whose ties pre-date the use of modern surnames.
• To help establish both recent historical and ancient migration patterns.
A cursory investigation of documentary evidence on early POTTS migrations into the U.S. reveals migrations from England, Ireland, Germany, Scotland, and Wales.
Known ancestral homes to our Project's participants include families from England and Ireland (including Northern Ireland), with many of our members not yet having determined those links. We feel that over time, this project will aid many of these families to determine their European origins.
A huge number of POTTS families first settled in the Delaware Valley (particularly in western New Jersey and Pennsylvania) and records of many gatherings of the Society of Friends (Quakers) reveal a good many POTTS families among them.
