About us
The causeway joining the Isle of Portland to mainland England was completed in 1839.
Prior to this Portland was a very isolated community with a very small pool of surnames.
The main surnames were Stone, Pearce, Comben, White, Lowman, Flann, Flew, Hinde, Otter, Attwool, Samways, Sansom. Ayles, Schollar, Bennett, Hansford etc.
After 1839 the community changed dramatically with the influx of "outsiders" during the building of the prision and breakwater.
This project hopes to link people with family who lived on Portland prior to 1839 and the opportunity to share information on their Portland ancestors.

If you have tested with a DNA company other than Family Tree DNA which hosts this project,
e.g. Ancestry.com you can upload your .zip file for free but they then charge you $40 to see you matches.
