Pattinsons from Carlisle, England (Kit #278732)
The earliest known (to me) reference to a Pattinson in Carlisle, England is to Thomas Pattinson, mayor of Carlisle.  He is recorded in the book "Some Municipal Records of Carlisle" written in 1887 by the Publications of the Cumberland & Westmorland Antiquarian & Archaeological Society in Volume 4 of their series.  It was digitized by the Allen Count Public Library of Indiana.  That book contains a transcription of the Dormont Book which was written in 1561.  The book contains various oaths of office for the town officials as well as a great deal of "constitutions orders provisions articles and reules to be observed in mayntenance of the comonewelth."  They are signed "by me Thomas Pattinson, mare" and various other officers of the town as well as of the various guildes.  Over the next several centuries there are mentioned many other Pattinsons of Carlisle within the book involved in various trades and activities.
Other sources for Pattinsons of Carlisle before 1800 can be found by searching through the records of the Public Record Office of the UK.  Perhaps the most famous Pattinson was Thomas Pattinson, a grocer by trade and in 1745 the Deputy Mayor of Carlisle during the Jacobite rebellion on behalf of the young pretender.  Thomas played a part in the defense and ultimate surrender of the town.  His actions so tickled the Scots that they wrote a song ridiculing him.
The earliest known Pattinson for kit #278732 is John Pattinson who is only mentioned as a Joiner in the 1857 marriage of his son John Pattinson to Mary Ann White.  Nothing more is known about the father but the son appears in the 1841 and 1851 UK census and in the 1860, 1870 and 1880 US census as well as various NY State census schedules.  The son moved with his new wife, their children and his children from his previous marriage to Margaret Wood to Albany, NY. John Pattinson the younger was born around 1815 and died in 1894.  The tester descends from his youngest child Angus Pattinson.
