About us
Results:
Our project originated with the Mosley/Moseley project also here on FTDNA. In that project 45 Mosley/Moseley/Mozleys of various spellings have been tested. The results of DNA testing shows:
1.Our Virginia Mozley line (descendants of brothers Walter and Edward) are not related to other known Virginia Mosley families specifically the family of William Moseley born about 1692 in the Rappahannock River area of Virginia and the family of "Lower Norfolk" VA Moseley line, which began in America with the arrival of William Moseley from Rotterdam, Holland in 1649. Our halotype of R1a1 and a value of 25 at marker 390 separate us from all the other families thus far tested.
2. We have verified that a descendant of Edwin Mozley Jr. and descendants of James H Mozley (both sons of Edward b. abt 1735) are related and share a common ancestor, thus verifying our paper documentation.
3. Within the Mozleys tested we have noted a higher than average number of changes in marker values as the Y-DNA was passed down from father to son through the generations. Four mutations were noted to have occurred in 8 generations within the branches of Edwin Jr. and brother James H. Mozley (sons of Edward Sr). These mutations occurred mostly on fast moving markers with one mutation likely occurring within the last two generations.
In terms of genealogy, mutations (or changes) in markers are a good thing. For example, if you test someone with no idea who his ancestors are, you can look at his DNA markers and if they match other Mozley descendant markers, you can conclude that he is a "Mozley". But if one of the markers he had tested is off by one or two numbers, you can look in the project and see if any other Mozleys had the change in that marker. If a certain branch has changed at a specific marker and the participant shows that change, you have isolated which branch of the tree he descends from. Under the y-results tabs the markers (or numbers) in red are known to be fast changing markers. This means that when this marker is passed down through the generations from father to son to son etc., a random change is more likely to occur. Other markers that Family Tree DNA chooses are very stable and rarely change. Family Tree DNA deliberately chooses the mix of stable and fast moving markers to test. This is how we know we are "Mozley descendants" (because we match) and also isolate which Mozley branch of the tree we came from (because we are different).
For those who have just received your kit, Welcome! While you’re waiting for the results to come in, you can prepare your male linage and email it to us. This is required for your results to be included on our Mozley project site.
"Thank You" to all who have sent in their information.
To see where these participants fall in the family tree, see the Tree outline under the "Goals" tab at the top of the page.
