The surnames in this DNA Project are researched as part of the Mornin surname study, which is registered with the Guild of One-Name Studies. Autosomal DNA is the type of test most people take and this project includes these. If you have not taken a Family Finder Autosomal test here on Family Tree DNA but have at Ancestry, MyHeritage or 23andMe you can upload your raw DNA to Family Tree DNA for free and then join the project. There is no need to take an additional test. This test works about 5 generations back, sometimes more. To maximize the benefit of this test, researching all branches of your family tree back 4-5 generations is valuable. This test works for both males and females.
Y-DNA these test tells you about your direct male line, which would be your father, his father, and so on back in time. You must be male to take this test, and you should have one of the surnames MORNIN, MORNING or MORNAN to take this test. If you have a different surname which you believe is connected to one of these variants please do get in touch to discuss. If you believe there is a Mornin or variant in your direct male line, although you have a different surname, you are also welcome to participate. The Y-DNA test for 37 markers is the first level of testing, it is possible to upgrade this later should you wish.
mtDNA is for learning about your direct female line, which would be your mother, her mother and so on back in time. This won't make much difference in this project but can be helpful with other research in your individual trees. mtDNA tests can be taken by both males & females, but only the females pass it on to their children.
The results of the DNA tests mentioned, contain no personal information, and you will match or be a close match to those to whom you are related. This is an opportunity to learn more about your origins and ancestry.
