This project is for *McElroy, McIlroy, McLeroy, McGilroy, McAlroy (with Mc = Mac = Muck) & similar surnames. "It is an anglicized spelling form of the Gaelic "Mac Giolla Ruaidh", composed of the elements "Mac", meaning son of, "giolla", the youth, and "ruaidh", red haired; hence, 'The son of the red haired youth'. The sept originated in County Fermanagh, Ireland, where the place name Ballymackilroy is found: Their territory was on the east side of Lough Erne. There is another Ballymackilroy in County Tyrone and a further Ballymacilroy in County Antrim.

This Project s for comparing Y-DNA to see which McELROYs* are kin & which are not, so we can share research with our genetic matches & do further research in the ancestral locales of our genetic matches to push our ancestry back further.
Besides Y-DNA, mtDNA is displayed in the mtDNA table of results & mtDNA of early McElroy* wives is esp. helpful in determining how many wives each man had, which daughters are from the same mother, & if any wives were e.g. Amerind, but to check a wife, you need to test (for each wife) one of her dau.'s dau.'s dau.'s ... children.
