About us

The McClendon DNA Project is open to all who are interested in working together to find their common heritage through sharing of information and DNA testing.

The McClendon DNA Project is a Y-DNA project, and only Y-DNA test results will be included.

Women can participate in the McClendon DNA Project by joining the project and ordering a Y-DNA test kit for a male McClendon relative.

If you simply wish to confirm your surname DNA, we recommend at least the 37 marker Y-DNA test kit.

If you wish to find clues to your McClendon ancestors' relatives, the 111 marker test is recommended. This is because the McClendons are a small family and many kits only have one or so mutations to distinguish them from the rest of the McClendons. See the current chart HERE that shows the Y-DNA markers with mutations.

Deeper DNA analysis may be necessary to create a complete map of how all the McClendons are related. Many historic and genealogical records are missing for the 1700s in North Carolina, so connecting our lines to Dennis the immigrant is often based on speculation.

To untangle the potential lines down from Dennis the immigrant, Big-Y testing is an important tool. Besides testing 700 STR markers, it also analyzes SNPs to give us a deeper understanding of the branches of the family tree. Here’s an explanation of the Big-Y  All male McClendons are encouraged to upgrade to the Big-Y. We have established a fund to help members with the cost of testing. Here's the current McClendon Surname Big-Y Block Tree. Each new kit tested has the potential of refining this Block Tree.

All variant spellings are eligible. If you wish to add to our list, please contact the group administrator.

You can both join the project and order a test kit here:
